1Maslows hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory inpsychology comprising a fivetier model of human needs oftendepicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramidMaslow 1943 1954 stated that people are motivated to achievecertain needs and that some needs take precedence over others Ourmost basic need is for physical survival and this will be thefirst thing that motivates our behavior Once that level isfulfilled the next level up is what motivates us and so onThis fivestage model can be divided into deficiency needs andgrowth needs The first four levels are often referred to asdeficiency needs Dneeds and the top level is known asgrowth or being needs BneedsDeficiency needs arise due to deprivation and are said tomotivate people when they are unmet Also the motivation tofulfill such needs will become stronger the longer the durationthey are denied For example the longer a person goes withoutfood the more hungry they will becomeMaslow 1943 initially stated that individuals must satisfylower level deficit needs before progressing on to meet higherlevel growth needs However he later clarified that satisfactionof a needs is not anallornone phenomenon admitting that hisearlier statements may have given the false impression that a needmust be satisfied 100 percent before the next need emerges 1987p 69When a deficit need has been more or less satisfied it will goaway and our activities    See Answer
