The following figure is a  homodyne detection forcoherent optical fiber communications . Once is the signal fromlaser and the other one is the local oscillator. After the QPSKdemodulation, the electric field E will go through the photo diodedetection. (you dont have to consider the photodiode in the blockdiagram design,but if you know how to do that, please do so :))
