Advair, a combine bronchodilator and inhaled steroid isrelatively slow working. Usually a patient has to wait at least anhour before the full effect of this medicine kicks in. We wereinterested whether the patients could be reclassified (from severeto moderate COPD) within one-hour based on their Advairintervention. Measurements were made before the Advair wasadministered and then exactly one-hour after the treatment. Hereare the data.
Advair Intervention - Test #2a |
Before Treatment | After Treatment | |
Severe | Moderate | Total |
Severe | 253 | 600 | 853 |
Moderate | 513 | 188 | 701 |
Total | 766 | 788 | 1554 |
So over 1,500 patients were studied. Of the 1,554, 853 (or 55%)were classified as being severe COPD patients before the Advairintervention and then after the intervention, this number droppedto 766 (or 50%).
So it appears there was an effect within the one-hour timeperiod. Now we need to show it statistically.
So using the McNemar test, test the claim at 95% confidence thatthere was an Advair intervention effect.
