Beech Bark Disease is a (mostly) fungal disease that was firstobserved in the US in NYC in the 1950's and is spreading south. Itkills mature trees in as little as 5 years. As it spreads throughthe UGA Botanical Garden, the size of the beech population isreduced by 98%, leaving only the 2% of individuals that exhibitsome resistance to the fungus. Over time the population increasesto its original size. All of the individuals in the new populationexhibit resistance to the fungus, but are more susceptible to rootrot disease.
