1 INTRODUCTIONAcoustics is the science of sound which deals with originpropogation and auditory sensation of sound and also with designand construction of different building units to set optimumconditions for producing and listening speech music etc Theknowledge of this science is necessary for the proper functionaldesign of theatres cinema halls auditoriums conference hallshospitals etc so that unwanted sound is excluded orinsulatedSound is generated in the air when a surface is vibrated Thevibrating surface sets up waves of compression and rarefaction inthe air and these set the ear drum vibrating The movements of theear drum are translated by the brain into sound sensation When thesound waves are periodic regular and long continued they producea pleasing effect such a sound is known as musical sound On thecontrary when the sound wave is nonperiodic irregular and ofvery short duration it produces displeasing effect such sound isknown as noise A noise is an abrupt sound of complex characterwith an irregular period and amplitude originating from a source ofnonperiodic motionTerminologies related to AcousticsAirborne sound Sound or noise radiated directly from a sourcesuch as a loudspeaker or machine into the surrounding airAmbient noise Total noise level in a specifiedenvironmentAudible frequency range The range of the sound    See Answer
