Inthe United States, the rare red wolf (Canis lupus) has been knownto hybridize with coyotes (Canis latrans), which are much morenumerous. Although red wolves and coyotes differ in terms ofmorphology, behavior and DNA, genetic evidence suggests that theliving red wolf individuals are actually hybrids. Red wolves aredesignated as an endangered species and hence receive legalprotection under the Endangered Species Act.
