It has been said thatif you are at a party and you tell someone you have a terribledisease or you are a terrorist, the conversation happily continues. But, if you tell them you are religious, an icy chill hits theair.
Peter Kreeft believes that much of this is due to ignorance in thearea of religious studies. His personal pet peeve is the statement:“All religions are the same deep down.” He states: “That is simplyfactually untrue. No one ever makes this claim unless he is:
abysmally ignorant of what the different religions of the worldactually teach or
intellectually irresponsible in understanding these teachings inthe vaguest and woolliest way or
morally irresponsible in being indifferent to them.”
Why would somebody say“deep down?” What would this “abysmally ignorant, intellectuallyirresponsible and morally irresponsible” person be trying to sayabout the human condition? Finally, are “all religions the samedeep down?” Is “Deep Down” unchangeable?
