It was recently announced that the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) will extend its regulatory authority to E-cigarettes, tobaccopipes, and cigars. They have proposed a ban of these products tothose under 18 (in person and Internet sales), those purchasingthese products must show identification, a ban on use in publicplaces, and products must include warning labels. The producers ofcigars and e-cigarettes must register with the FDA, provide adetailed accounting of their product ingredients, disclose theirmanufacturing processes and scientific data, and would be subjectto FDA inspections. Many have argued that the FDA oversight willclose the smaller producers. They argue that innovations to theseproducts will be significantly slowed down due to theseregulations. The regulations will also increase theircosts--application costs, user fees, creating scientific costs willforce the smaller producers to close down or merge with the largerproducers (many are the tobacco industry).
