All of Balchen's products contain palm oil which is supplied by large companies that operate extensive plantations in Indonesia which remove large areas of rainforest in order to expand the palm cultivation. At a meeting of the board of directors, Aziz pointed out that companies buying palm oil from non-sustainable sources were getting a lot of adverse publicity and proposed that in future the company only purchase palm oil from certified sustainable sources. Michael and Zibad have both personally invested in companies which are not so certified and they vote against the resolution. However, later, Balchen is named in a Facebook campaign as a company contributing to the loss of rainforest and sales fall dramatically. The same week there is another disaster- there is a fire at Balchen's factory which results in the chemical pollution of the farmland next to the factory as well as the famous salmon river nearby, Advise Balchen
