Question 1. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an exampleof a protein mis-folding disorder since most of the mutationsassociated with CF lead to the improper folding and processing ofthe plasma membrane-localized Cystic Fibrosis TransmembraneConductance Regulator ion channel (CFTR).
The CFTR protein initially entersthe endomembrane system through the process of co-translationaltranslocation into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and is insertedas a Type IV membrane protein. N-linked glycosylation of the CFTRprotein then takes place in the ER and continues in theGolgi.
Name the four types ofsequence signals in the CFTR protein required for its propertargeting and processing up to this point (the Golgi) and give anexplanation for each.
