The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial followed diabetespatients diagnosed with retinopathy before joining the study. Theywere randomly assigned to one of two treatments and monitored for 6years. The study found that 121 of the 344 patients assigned to theconventional treatment showed a sustained progression of theiroriginal retinopathy. In contrast, only 62 of the 376 patientsassigned to the intensive treatment had sustained retinopathyprogression.
