Maintaining proper energy balanceinvolves complex interactions among several organ systems in thebody. In the hypothalamus there is a satiety center and a hungercenter. Leptin is an anorexigenic (i.e., satiety) signal, whereasghrelin is an orexigenic signal (i.e., promotes appetite). Leptinis a peptide hormone produced by adipocytes. Ghrelin is a peptidehormone produced by gastric cells in the stomach. There are leptinreceptors and ghrelin receptors in the hypothalamus.
