To test the effectiveness of a new drug (Phasomaxtrin) designedto treat Quarantinitis, researchers conducted a clinical trial. Thesubjects were 512 adult American volunteers with advancedQuarantinitis. Half were randomly assigned to take the drug and theother half were randomly assigned to take a placebo. Neither thesubjects nor the doctors who evaluated them knew who was in whichgroup. After three years, 32 percent of those who got Phasomaxtrinwere no longer afraid to keep staying inside, compared with only 23percent of those who got the placebo. (The difference isstatistically significant.)
